In one of my missions with the US army, one of the I.P. (Iraqi Police) told me and my colleague interpreter that “once the Americans go out we will slaughter you like pigs”

Every body knows that without the help of the Iraqi local linguists, the U.S. troops would not be able to accomplish it’s mission in Iraq. We are so proud we have helped in this great and humanitarian mission. Though we put ourselves and families in a serious danger because we have been seen frankly with the U.S. troops. Now the US troops are going back home and the processes of our relocation are still taking so long time.

Shall we see the day when we get to a safe place? or the “history will repeat itself” ?   (Anonymous)

Hello ,am TROY ( nickname ) and this is my story:
I worked with the US forces in IRAQ providing my services as a local interpreter for almost three years, working with four different army units throughout IRAQ. Because of that, the militia threatened to kill me and my family if I continue to work with the US army by a letter. They knew exactly were I work. And because of that ,I did quit. In addition to that, my family and I moved to a diffrent province within less than a week. Now I live in fear that they find me again and hurt me and my family. But the biggest fear is when the US forces leave IRAQ,the interpreters will be assasinated be the militias, because you probably know that all of the information of the interpreters worked with the coalition forces are registered in the iraqi ministery of interior. And you also probably know that the iraqi government is infiltrated by the militia. Add these two facts and the result is a massacre.
Hundreds of other iterpreters are experiencing the same threat.

****Hello everybody :

my aka is ( JOHN ) I’m one of the interpreters who work for U.S.FORCES as a local national interpreter  for year and half I’ve worked with three military units in South of Iraq and the U.S. company which assigns the linguists for the U.S. Forces gave our informations to the Iraqi Government and I got released month ago because of the military downsizing in Iraq and since when I got released I didn’t go out of my house because some people in my city  know I used to work for the U.S.forces so Imagine if the U.S.forces are gone how our situation is going to be and the U.S.Embassy in baghdad keep delaying our visa issuance and the give us estimated time and when this time is over we don’t get our visa issued and when we email them the respond your case is under an adminstrative processing

“I was given two options  “Death” or “Quit working”. Ever since then I and my family are living in  constant fear and may face the “DEATH” option at any time! “

I  have been directly threatened couple of times. The first time, three strangers  came to me and told me to quit my job. After that incident, the unit I was  assigned to moved to southern Iraq. I went along with them, thinking no one  will know me there, and thus me and my family will be safe, but only one week  later, two guys on a motor cycle went to my family’s house and told my brother  all the details about me and the place I was working in. They left a note with  my brother; I was given two options “DEATH” or “Quit working”.

Two days later my family abandoned our house and are  living in our relatives house to avoid been spotted. Ever since then, I and my  family are living in constant fear and may face “The DEATH Option” at any time

“We know you very well, infidel. We will  eliminate the infidelity sooner or later”

I used to work as an electrician  with the US army, later I become an interpreter. One day I found a note on my  front door. The note read “We know you very well, infidel. We know your parents  too, are infidel (that is because my parents are affiliated with Iraqi Communist  Party). Quit working with US army, we will “eliminate the infidelity sooner or  later”.

On February 13th 2010,  was another fearsome day for me, this time my front door was tied by a rope  from the outside and another note was posted on the door “If you do not come  back [convert back] to your religion and if you do not come back to your  country, you will pay for it with your wife and daughter’s lives” read the  second note.

After the second threat, my wife and  I decided to leave the house, she and my daughter went back to her parents, and  I was working in Ammarah, which is a very dangerous place in Iraq.
Now as the US army withdraws,  leaving us in Iraq with a corrupt government and many militias, I have no idea  how to protect myself and my family!! The situation is getting worse and the  fear is outrageous!

Hello

I’m an individual with one leg because I lost my right leg in the war between Iraq and Iran in 1986. I worked for the U.S Military as a Translator from 2004 – 2008. My son worked as a translator for the U.S. Military from 2007 – 2009 and now he is in Texas, USA as a Permanent Resident there.
I assisted plenty units that worked in Baghdad, Iraq during my employment for the U.S. Government. However, in August 2008 while me and my son were working at FOB Falcon Baghdad but for separate units, my wife called me and informed me that she found a letter of threat at the door step of our apartment in Baghdad saying  the following : (We know that you people are supporting the Crusaders and the darkness Forces of United States here in Iraq. And here we give a duration of 24 Hours to leave this place or otherwise we will put our punishment on you which is shameful death to one of your family members).
When I heard that from my wife, I rapidly told my unit about that and said that I ought to leave the Military base and hurriedly going back to my wife and 3 other children because they had nobody to stay with them.
When I got home, I ripped all my recommendations that I had received from the previous units that I assisted in Baghdad, so then I had no letters can proof that I worked for the Military. However in SIV program, one of the conditions to continue in the SIV application is to have some letters of recommendations from U.S. Military commanders saying that I was a good Translator to assist me to get a Visa to travel to the U.S. and that’s my son have done till he got his Visa and left.
I helped my family to move out of our apartment in less than 4 hours, because it was really dangerous for us to stay there anymore.
So I took my family and went to the North of Iraq where people there speak completely different language over there because I knew nobody there and nobody knew us for security reasons. My son Saif stayed in Baghdad working at the same Military Base until he left to the U.S. And my daughter had to quit her college in Baghdad because we had to move.
Now I’m still unemployed because in this bad Iraq nobody is willing to hire me anywhere for these reasons:

1. Because I’m 52 years old.
2. My disability of the right leg during the war as mentioned previously.
3. There are not alot of jobs in Iraq to find.
4. My current address is in Sulaymania, Iraq, Because it is never secured to move back to Baghdad specially with the violence now.
5. I’m retired and the Iraqi government pay me $200 every month, and that’s never enough to cover life expenses these days.

I applied for the SIV program, but they wanted to see any letters of recommendations can proof that I was employed on behalf of the U.S. Government and I had nothing except that GLS Verification that says that I worked for 4 years.
And so I ignored the program.
In the date of 11-08-2008 I applied for the IOM program for a Refugee Status to the United States. But yet I’m still for the process to be done! So me and my family been waiting for that process to be done but no news from the IOM yet.

Sorry for the long story that I wrote but that was just a little bit of what me and my family have been through because of our mentality to be free from bad regimes and that’s the main reason why I allowed myself and my son to do for the better life but unfortunately we were not lucky!

Sincerely,

Anonymous

*******************************************************************************************************************************************Dear “Hero” Translators/ Interpreters as other  brunch of security related organs  their parts to help maintain security in Afghanistan by joining International Forces and providing translation services. unfortunately, the situation is totally changed now not only in Afghanistan but also out of Afghanistan like EU countries. as it is clear and all know that the situation in Afghanistan is getting worse and instead to reward the translators for being in the front lines and war zones, they are being life threatened and are not safe anymore. even some of the heroes who left Afghanistan due to the risk of life and seeked asylum in EU countries, they got negative answer to their asylum case.  This question of ” IF translators are being taken care of, should be answered by the international community “, they are failing the war there, they hired translators and they are the reasons why these translators are in risk. All these translators thought they are taking part in a campaign to bring security in the region and there would be no issues for them living in a expected peaceful Afghanistan, these Heroes, really did and doing a great service for their beloved Afghanistan and ISAF Forces. No where is safe home for translators. The records for the immigration offices in EU countries, specially in Denmark  are showing that not updated and are saying it’s safe for Afghan translators to live in Kabul which is the capital of Afghanistan… We translators understand how easy it’s for the insurgents to find out about translators, hence, they are everywhere, even in the government as we see every time ISAF Forces are targeting by Afghan Security Forces. so, it is hard to believe.
Note: most of the Heroes got negative in Denmark. they says your life is not in Danger and you are not son of Karzai. if i or our heroes are son of Karzai, are we crazy to get out of Afghanistan? we would have thousands of bodyguards and no need to leave your everything. i think International community should pay attention on the current situation of Afghan interpreters who has served with ISAF.

Dear Sir/madam!
I have been working with US forces since 22 September 2010 until present. I served as a linguist for the Marine Corps from 1 November 2010 until June 2011. During that time I have conducted combat operations in various areas of southern Sangin District in Helmand province. This is known as the most dangerous place in the world as it was described by the BBC. I have been involved in direct fire engagements with the enemy, and exposed to improvised Explosive Devices (IED). I have treated and assisted locals who were struck by IEDs, confiscated IED making materials, conducted census operations all while partnered with the Afghanistan National Army (ANA). The location has been some of the most kinetic in the country. During this time I saw a reporter from BBC News and during the combat missions he took some video clips by the name of bomb valley that were shown on the BBC one broad cast. After several days had past, I had heard that I was recognizing by my relatives in Logar province in that video and they threaded me of killing and my other relatives are also informed of this that we going to kill Srosh, because I am working with US forces. I was also told by the other Linguist that they saw me on YouTube website. The link is down in this letter. From that day on I have been afraid for my life and I am sure that the enemies also saw the video and recognize me. I feel because of this video clip my life is in danger. My relatives suggested the only way that to save my life is to get out of Afghanistan. I am hopeful that he US government will approved my Visa, and I will make a promise to the US government that I will follow and respect the US government and I don’t want to do anything against the Security of the US. My hopes and dream are to become an American citizen and join the United States Marine.

  3. all kinds of sad stories , frustrations and disappointments that makes the blood boils in the human body ,the question is ,is there any official who cares about us and wants to change this miserable situation

    • Dear Oppressed Interpreter,
Yes, I know there are some officials that are very concerned about you and they have sent a letter to Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense, demanding to know what he will do to help you. If you have been unable to open this document, it is because it is in a format that is difficult for some computers to open, but you should be able to see it on here tomorrow because I bought ink cartridges to print it out, copy it to picture format instead of document format, and post it for everyone to see. It shows the names (signers) of this letter to Panetta………….asking for an answer to this situation. So you will be able to see that at least some officials care although they are not the bosses. At least they are willing to put their names to paper with this question about your well being.

  4. Our American views and Our approach to the American way of life and love for the US Army
Soldier, the symbol of freedom which We worked so proudly for, are effected by the consequences of
the security situation that come with this job.
we may started our lives in a society not of our choice, which is controlled by the element of force instead
of the logic of law. We may mostly living in one of the most dangerous areas of Iraq,
, where terrorist acts and sabotage are aimed at all every day by the hands of
terrorist groups without discrimination. Also we mostly saw a lot of explosions and assassinations with
our own eyes while we were on Duties. After involvement in working with the US Army we had to have learn how to control ourselves and acclimate with the environment around our and how to communicate with people that we have to leave with them most of the day & night times under the sun light or under the rain, Most of us had to move to somewhere else too
Terrorism may has become a trend, but most of the terrorist acts have been aimed at
Translators (TERPs), and dealers with the coalition forces (unarmed citizens). As
Interpreters. we consider ourselves targeted by these terrorists and we may were forced to not take our vacations
except on a monthly or long-term basis and with extreme care for most of us.
Our neighbors are not people we can count on and there was often a fear of the threat of being
kidnapped or assassinated while we were on vacation. There is concern that terrorist groups know
our nature of our work before and that will be a serious threat to us and our families.
Most of us do not deny that living our lives in a horrible nightmares haunted by no guarantee of
survival after this full withdrawal of coalition forces (US ARMY) from the country,
The threat of death is inevitable that will be facing us and the members of our families.
We can only say that our loyalty is the biggest factor in our work with the US Army before and the
coalition forces as a member of their family after it has become the source of our success, We beseech you to save our lives as most of us did by serve and make your Missions in Iraq to be successes by speeding up the Visas Issuance and Accelerating Our Relocation to somewhere More Safer..
    Please don’t LEAVE us BEHIND.
And Don’t Let the history of Vietnam’s War REPEATS it SELF.

    (The US.FORCES TERPs) .

  5. I’m an afghan interpreter who has worked with US Army since 2009,
Our lives are in danger like iraqis too, we can’t go home or do anything else… once the US army leave afghanistan then we will not be able to get another job, cuz we are considered as spy among the people…
I,ve applied for SIV COM Approval about 10 months ago but I’m not responed yet…
I’m requesting from US Government Officials to consider us as their friends and the people who were keys for the missions and pull us out of Afghanistan…
    Thanks you very much…

  7. Dear Sir/Madam,
I am an Afghan interpreter/Translator. I have worked for US Army Since 2003 till October 15th 2011. During this long duraiton of time I was an exceptional Translator for the US Army about what I got letters of recommendations, Certificates, Medals. from 2003 till july 2004 I have worked with US Army as linguist and interpreter in FOB Salerno where my Job was to collect key informations about Haqqani’s terrourest network from key and influentiol leaders and Civilian Media. As my life was in risk I had managed to move myself form FOB Salerno To BAF. in September 2004. There I was assigned to difrent FOBs like Fob Ghazni, Fob Sheendad, QRF BAF MPs patrols went on missons to other Fobs like Fob Shrana. Fob Tagab and many more.
During this long time of job I have provided my honest loyal and faithful Trustworthy service for the US Army. in 2007 I submitted a immagration pakage for immagration to Safe neibghourhood. for that package I got letters of recommendations form 06 (Colonel) level. I had waited for that one for almost two years. Later as I was working for another Unit. I found out from my previous unit that my immagration Package was lost.
for two more times I tried to apply from my last Unit where I haven’t heard anythig form it. then last year I have applied for Chief of Misson (COM). During this one year time I have waited for them. In October 15th 2011 an issue happend to me which I will send the whole details about it to you in future by email for security reasons I can not to mention the whole story in here. This issue was an issue that belonged to juridical issues and was not any criminal or terrorisom issue. I got fired from job and untill now I am applying to diffirent organizations when they ask about my past work history they simply reply for me you may still be working for them. even in the Afghan Govenment no one is Trusting me. We are called US spies.
Dear Mam Linda Hirashima I Kindly ask you to reffer my concerne to some one who will take care of my situation. My BAF Id number is: C2157.

  8. I am Afghan national
My life is completely at risk due to my employment services with U.S military and coalition forces in Afghanistan. I am not safe as my family members are receiving consecutive direct and indirect threats due to my employment with Coalition Forces in Afghanistan. The Taliban and Al-Qaida are distributing night letters and warning all local employees with employment with Coalition Forces to quit jobs. If not, we will be punished with execution or assassination. My family members are receiving suggestions such as your son or brother should quit job before you or him are killed. Due to these threats they are mentally affected and are asking me to stop performing my employment with Coalition Forces.
I worked on behalf of U.S. and Coalition Forces as a manager and administrator of NGOs from 2003-2007 in Afghanistan. Then I have started my employment services as interpreter and translator with U.S military and coalition forces at military bases from 2007-2011 in different provinces, Afghanistan.

I have extremely done my best over the past seven years for a better and brighter future for my country and took part in reconstruction and rehabilitation to bring peace to the region.
Finally (8 months ago) I applied for SIV-COM program to ask for a waiver to be granted immediate asylum for my family and I through this golden opportunity but due to unspecified reasons Chief of Mission designee is not able to estimate how long the case review will take for each individual case at US Embassy Kabul.

Realities; “sometimes interpreters who go on leave never return, killed on leave while visiting his or her family”. “without Interpreters many more of US- troops would be coming home in body bags” “Many of US citizens as sons and daughters have returned home safely because of the interpreters skill”. “Interpreters are always the bridge in between the US force and local nationals”. US has really decent and loyal personalities I used to work with but the decision makers are drinking coffees at their offices and doing nothing for USA.

Eventually; I have decided to go illegally to humanist country for asylum. Waiting for U.S immigrant visa is just deceiving family and self and its too great a risk for me and my family as we are on the edge of death.

    Yours very sincerely;
    Farid
